Exciting NEW opportunity for auditioning

Dan School of Drama and Music STRING students

in March 2022!

We are offering auditioning string students to the Dan School of Drama and Music an opportunity to also audition for the Kingston Symphony Orchestra, a well-established professional orchestra which performs at the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts.

The two have a close relationship, hiring many of our faculty in principal roles in the orchestra. Over the past years, many of our students have been hired for occasional work. It is a wonderful chance to experience a professional setting, hear internationally renowned guest soloists and work alongside seasoned orchestral musicians. This would be in addition to your Dan School mandatory orchestral ensemble course and not in lieu of.

IMPORTANT: The audition process for the KSA is different from the audition process for the Dan School and will be held only on March 26th, 2022, in late morning, the day before your DSDM audition. Only students with an advanced playing level (RCM ARCT recommended) should consider this option.

The process is as follows:
  1. Communicate with Kim Gudlauski at kim.gudlauski@queensu.ca , and let her know you would like your DSDM audition on March 27th, 2022.
  2. Once confirmed, contact the personnel manager for the KSA, Linda Craig at personnelmanager@kingstonsymphony.ca / (613) 546-9729 and request an audition.
  3. She will send you the audition material (orchestral excerpts and piece of your own choice) and assign you a time.
  4. Once you’ve auditioned, the audition committee will convene to discuss and respond by the next day as to whether you are a suitable candidate for the sub list with the KSA.
  5. If accepted, you will be contacted by end of summer 2022 and possibly offered a concert in the fall season.
  6. You will be paid for your services.
There is a Kingston Symphony concert on Saturday, March 26, 2022, at 2:30pm at the Isabel Centre which you might want to take in while you are visiting Kingston. Tickets are available through the IBCPA website or at the box office the day of.

If you are not successful on the first attempt but have potential, there will be other opportunities to audition later.
