Three of John Burge’s Twenty-Four Preludes for Solo Piano were selected as the imposed pieces for the 2021 Concours musical international de montréal. Over four days in May 2021, eight finalists played Preludes Nos. 22, 23 and 6. Usually the final round of this competition would be three pianists playing a concerto with Orchestre symphonique de montréal, but the competition was entirely virtual with pianists recording the semi-final and final rounds around the world. All performances are available for viewing online. If you want to hear John Burge’s pieces, check out Alice Burla performance at the 26 minute mark. Alice, one of two Canadian pianists in an international field of 26 competitors, was awarded the special prize for the performance of Burge’s music.
