Music Direction for Music Theatre [MUTH 329]

Music Direction for Music Theatre, MUTH 329 (fall) This course focuses on the theoretical knowledge and practical application of skills in the direction of music theatre. Students will acquire an understanding of varying styles in music theatre from Opera to Broadway and develop specific skills in music direction and music performance. Prereq: Third year standing or above in DRAM or MUSC concentration. 

Topics considered will include conducting practice in music theatre, scoring, arranging and orchestration, accompanying from chord symbols, improvisation, rehearsal preparation and practice. Complimenting this technical instruction will be application through ensemble accompaniment for theatrical performance (orchestra or band).

Students will also examine how technology is changing musical direction including the use of digital tools including MainStage, Logic and ProTools as well as the use of click tracks and score notation software such as Sibelius and Finale.

Through a collaborative approach essential in music theatre, students will work alongside music, drama and music theatre students and faculty contributing musically to in-house and public musical productions with a focus on music direction and musical accompaniment of music theatre. Through this approach students will participate first hand in the process of music direction and the creation of music for music theatre.
