Perspectives on Indigenous Sound and Performance in the Arts [MUTH 245]
Topics in Music Theatre: Perspectives on Indigenous Sound and Performance in the Arts
This course explores Indigenous arts in Canada with a focus on sound, music, and performance. We will examine the ways in which the arts play an important role in explicating the historical, social, and cultural conditions shaping Indigenous and non-Indigenous relations in Canada. Students will encounter works by Indigenous artists (performers, composers, and so on) across a spectrum of eras and genres, and course readings will centre Indigenous voices and thinkers. Throughout, we will consider how these works register within broader themes of decolonization, reclamation, representation, sovereignty, and Indigenous resurgence.
No previous musical knowledge is required.
