Dr. Stephanie Lind presented a poster on Musical Subversion in Undertale in November 2020 at the Society for Music Theory’s annual conference.  Released in 2015, the video game Undertale achieved massive popularity due to its unique mix of humour, non-violent gameplay, and a retro aesthetic; Using new methods of transcribing video game music, Stephanie’s paper examines how many elements within the game, including its music, satirize and subvert the expectations of the 1980s-/90s-era established by the game’s retro aesthetic.
