Karma Tomm maintains a multi-faceted career as a music administrator, teacher, adjudicator, and performing violinist. Ms. Tomm has performed professionally with orchestras and ensembles of various sizes and toured North America, Europe and Asia participating in several international festivals. With diverse experience in chamber and symphonic music, early music, opera, ballet, fiddle, jazz, and session work, she enjoys exploring music of all styles. Her collaborations with composers have resulted in premières of many new works, and she has recorded on Koch International and Nonesuch.

Ms. Tomm has taught violin and chamber music for over 25 years to students of all ages. From 1997-2007 she was based at Tufts University where she taught violin, chamber music and music theory, and served as the Coordinator of Applied Music from 2001-2007.

In 2007 she came to Kingston as the founding Director of Queen’s Conservatory of Music, which became Queen’s Community Music in 2015. She is also the Chamber Music Coordinator at the Dan School of Drama and Music where she teaches violin, chamber music, and orchestra sectionals. An active member of the community, Ms. Tomm has adjudicated music festivals across the country, served on the Board of Directors of the Kingston Arts Council, and represented Queen’s University on the Board of the Tett Centre for Creativity. She currently serves on the Kingston Symphony Association Programming Committee, and the Kingston Arts Advisory Council.

To further the community outreach mandate of Queen’s Community Music (QCM), Ms. Tomm, together with colleagues from the Limestone District School Board and The Joe Chithalen Memorial Musical Instrument Lending Library (Joe’s MILL), launched Sistema Kingston in 2015. Through QCM and Sistema Kingston, Ms. Tomm is committed to providing access to music learning to children from underserved communities and to providing professional development opportunities for university students.
