Western Art Music: Industrialization to the Internet Western Art Music II [MUSC 211]

Music history is a vast enterprise, one that we will explore from a variety of perspectives. We will study the principles of design and cultural significance of music from 1800 to 2020, including Western Art Music and vernacular music. In addition to delving deeply into analysis (musical, narrative, cultural, and critical) of these musical repertoires and practices in order to gain insight into how music was shaped by the power dynamics of each historical context, we will also become ever aware of our contemporary lens on it. With the help of source texts, recordings, video, and secondary sources, we will discover many new ways of listening to music, talking about music, writing about music, and engaging with it personally. There has been some truly incredible music created over the past 220 years—I can’t wait to share it with all of you.
