Description: The Queen's University Wind Ensemble (winds, brass & percussion), directed by Dan Tremblay, is open to all members of the University community by audition. The Wind Ensemble usually meets twice a week and performs approximately three times a year. In past years, conjunct concerts with other high caliber Canadian wind ensembles and conductors was encouraged. Past collaborations included performances with the McGill Wind Symphony (Alain Cazes), Western University (Colleen Richardson), UofT (Gillian MacKay), and the Central Band of the Canadian Forces (Capt. Fullerton).
Due to the pandemic situation and the Dean’s recommendations, the Fall term 2020 will be delivered remotely. Zoom meetings will occur weekly during which the students, under the supervision of the Musical Director, will discover and discuss important repertoire written for wind ensemble. This will be a great occasion to learn about the most prolific and influential composers that contributed, and are still contributing, to the creation of rich and unique repertoire. These discussions will allow the Music Director and the students to choose the repertoire for one or two concerts to be performed in the Winter term 2021. Early in November, PDF of the music chosen will be provided to the musicians so that the repertoire can be fully prepared before our first in-person rehearsal in January. Short excerpts from that music will be recorded by the students and forwarded to the Music Director for assessment.
In the Winter term, we hope to be back to “normal” and return to in-person rehearsals held twice a week. The music studied and discovered in the previous term will be performed in the format of one or two standard concerts.
Audition requirements: Excerpts for each instrument can be found below. A list of the two excerpts to be recorded for the audition has been posted at the top of the Audition Excerpts list found at the bottom of this page. Students are required to submit a video recording of those two excerpts (uninterrupted, no splicing) following the information provided on the Ensemble Auditions webpage.
Prior to submitting the recorded video, students must complete an Online Ensemble Audition Application. Do note that if a student is auditioning for more than one ensemble, they must complete only ONE form but indicate their preference by ranking the ensembles under consideration. Placements will be done conjunctly by the large ensemble directors after assessing the video recording.Other factors for placement in an ensemble are contingent upon the number of positions available.
The deadline for submitting the video recording is Thursday, September 3, 2020. Results will be posted shortly thereafter.
