Queen's University

Earn credits while continuing to develop your music education with one-on-one lessons!

Do you have a music background? We offer one-on-one instrumental or vocal instruction for students who are not music majors. MUSC 124 is a 6.0 unit course. It consists of 23 individual weekly one-hour lessons (or an equivalent amount of time every fortnight). Students can take 124 at any point in their Queen's studies (as long as they pass the audition) and continue thereafter throughout your time at Queen's.

Students are expected to practice weekly, and play a final jury examination held in the week following the end of classes in April. So for example, by successfully auditioning and registering in MUSC 124, a non-music Queen’s student who has taken piano lessons for many years can continue taking lessons for a full credit!

Students are expected to play a final jury examination held in the week following the end of classes in April, and to participate in Studios (Wednesdays at 1:30pm) for their instrument/voice.  The final course mark consists of an average of the jury mark and the instructor's mark for work completed during the academic year.

Prerequisites:

To participate in MUSC 124...

1.       You must have Royal Conservatory of Music, or equivalent, of Grade IX Piano or Grade VIII in all other instrument/voice areas offered by the Dan School of Drama and Music.

2.       An audition will be required.

Pre-registration is not possible for MUSC 124 because of the audition process.  Pre-registration is recommended for upper levels (224, 324, 424) only upon successful completion of MUSC 124.

PRACTICE ROOM BOOKING

Each MUSC 124 student is entitled to 10 hours of practice time in piano practice rooms, however you must sign up for this in advance.  All scheduling of practice rooms listed directly below can be accessed and booked online through your portal on the Queen's website.

The Dan School has an online room booking system for student use.  To log on go to https://webapp.queensu.ca/artsci/DMRoomBooking/#/calendar and enter your NetID and password.  You will then automatically be taken to the Room Booking Application where you can choose the building and room of your choice.

Auditions:

To inquire if your instrument is being offered in 2018-19, please contact Kim Gudlauski at kim.gudlauski@queensu.ca

After your successful audition, you will be automatically registered.

However, if for some reason the audition does not work out, or if instruction in your instrument is not available, consider registering for non-credit music instruction with Queen's Community Music!
