"Theatre as Feeling-Machine”

Grahame Renyk and Kelsey Jacobson will illustrate, through two different case studies, the affective power of theatre. Using Come From Away, Grahame will discuss how the popular musical form is a happiness-machine, capable of adhering happy affects to both physical (e.g. material goods and bodies) and conceptual (values, ideals, myths) objects. Kelsey will examine rhianniboi95, a theatrical monologue told in the style of a Youtube confessional, to consider how a digital platform can cultivate an affective experience that both feels real and has real effect both on- and off-line.
