Applications for Thesis and Directed Studies

Students can complete an undergraduate thesis (6.0 units) (DRAM/MUSC/MUTH 500) or a Directed Study (DRAM/MUSC/MUTH 501) in the final year of the program. These are special topic courses related to the core curriculum in your selected plan. You will be supervised and evaluated by a faculty member.

To be considered for enrolment in this course, you must have:

  • at least an A- GPA and
  • a complete proposal

Proposals are submitted by March 15th prior to your final year. The proposal will be reviewed and evaluated by the Academic Planning Committee. Be sure to review all the components of a complete proposal.

Course Descriptions

DRAM 500/6.0 Senior Project

An independent advanced project or thesis in any area of the basic curriculum in drama, supervised and evaluated by faculty.

NOTE: In addition to the prerequisites indicated, the School may require a grade of A- in any DRAM course relevant to the subject of study.

PREREQUISITE: Level 4 and registration in a DRAM Major or Medial Plan and a GPA of 3.5 in DRAM and permission of the School.

 

MUSC 500/6.0 Honours Thesis

A substantive research project in music on a topic of the student’s choice, completed under the supervision of a faculty member.

NOTE: MUTH 380/3.0 is recommended as a prerequisite for bibliographic and qualitative projects. MUTH 387/3.0 is recommended for quantitative projects.

PREREQUISITE: Level 4 and registration in a MUSC Major Plan and permission of the School. COREQUISITE MUTH 380/3.0 or MUTH 387/3.0.

EXCLUSION(S): MUSC 592/6.0.

 

MUTH 500/6.0 Senior Project

PREREQUISITE: Level 4 and a GPA of 3.50 in DRAM/MUSC/MUTH and permission of the School.

MUSC 501/3.0  Directed Special Study

Advanced supervised study in music research.

NOTE: In addition to the prerequisites indicated below, the School may require a grade of A- in any MUSC course relevant to the subject of study.

PREREQUISITE:  Level 4 and a GPA of 3.50 in MUSC and permission of the School.

 

MUTH 501/3.0  Directed Special Study

An independent advanced project in any area of the basic curriculum in music/theatre, supervised and evaluated by faculty.

NOTE: In addition to the prerequisites indicated, the School may require a grade of A- in any DRAM, MUSC or MUTH course relevant to the subject of study.

PREREQUISITE: Level 4 and a GPA of 3.50 in DRAM/MUSC/MUTH and permission of the School.

Proposal Information

Your written proposal must include the following information:

    1. Title of the project

    2. Short summary of the project (1 paragraph)

    3. Project outline that includes:

      • context of the project

      • qualifications of the student to undertake this project

      • objectives that the project intends to pursue

      • methodology of the project

    4. Preliminary reading list

    5. List of assignments/tasks and a detailed assessment scheme

    6. Outline of planned contact hours involved in the project

    7. Estimate of student work hours involved in the project

    8. Date of completion of the project if it falls outside those stipulated for Fall/Winter terms in the University Calendar

    9. Statement about whether or not your project will involve interviews, observations, or survey, or any other involvement of human participants?

NOTES:

It is the student's responsibility to find a faculty supervisor(s). The student will need to provide a letter of approval from their faculty supervisor stating that the supervisor has approved the proposal and agrees to be the supervisor. Supervision of directed study and thesis projects will be prioritized to tenure and tenure-track faculty members. If you are requesting to be supervised by an adjunct faculty member, please consult with the Undergraduate Chair before submitting an application.

Approval of any projects is conditional upon prerequisites, available space, scheduling, and resources

The review committee may, in consultation with the student and faculty supervisor(s) involved, propose modifications to the project. If it appears advisable or helpful, the review committee may require a meeting with the student and/or supervisor.

In special circumstances, the department may choose to make an exception to the required student GPA.  Please consult with the Undergraduate Chair in advance of submitting an application should you wish to request such an exception.

The review committee may stipulate the conditions that must be met by the student before proceeding with the project.

A student may undertake a project during any academic term.

No budgetary resources will be provided in support of these courses.

The department will enroll the student into the appropriate course code once the proposal is approved by the review committee.
