NAXOS CD Released Devoted to String Orchestra

Abstract

The Thirteen Strings Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Kevin Mallon, has recorded a CD for NAXOS devoted to some of John Burge's string orchestra music that was commissioned and premiered by the orchestra between 1993-2000. When Kevin Mallon became Music Director of this orchestra about 10 years ago, he decided to reprogram all these pieces with the goal of making this CD. The recording was made in fall of 2019 but then shelved to deal with more pressing matters related to COVID-19 constraints. A quick listen (or purchase of the CD) can be found on one of the many streaming services listed on the link provided. It is worth adding that flautist Joanna G'froerer and cellist Rachel Mercer, both National Arts Centre Orchestra Principals, perform the two featured solo parts with wonderful virtuosity. Also, from within the ensemble, the cello solo of the "Aria" from SINFONIA ANTIQUA played by Julian Armour, who was in the orchestra way back in 1993 (and probably longer) really breaks my heart in the best way. Also, concert master, Manuela Milani, gets to play a fiddle-like solo in the middle movement of UPPER CANADA FIDDLE SUITE with a retuning of a second violin to A-E-A-C#.
