Abstract
This summer, Dr. Stephanie Lind presented her paper "Evoking the Past: Tensions Between Historical and Gameplay Functions in Assassin's Creed" at the 2022 conference of the Canadian University Music Society at Acadia University. The paper explored how sound and music in video games distinguish between gameplay versus narrative functions (that is, can function as cues to the player on actions to take vs. giving information on the fictional gameworld and story), resulting in greater player engagement.
