Critical Sound and Listening Pedagogies: A Collaborative Inquiry with Music Educators

Date

Friday February 2, 2024
1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Douglas Friesen and Adriana Rodrigues will lead an interactive presentation of their research on the sound and listening pedagogies of R. Murray Schafer. This talk will include some listening prompts, practices, and audio excerpts (data). Adriana will discuss the significance of Schafer's sound and listening pedagogies in Latin American music education. Doug will share findings of an arts based collaborative inquiry into Schafer's pedagogies. Participating teachers investigated the possible forms and trajectories that institutional music education could (should) take if students’ abundant knowledge, experiences, and abilities were not only recognized but centred in music classrooms.

Doug Friesen is a teacher and musician based in Toronto. He has worked as a classroom teacher and consultant in public schools since 2002. During this time, he has also taught a number of post-secondary and additional qualification courses for teachers. He is currently an adjunct lecturer at Queen's University and is finishing a PhD on sound and listening pedagogies with a focus on critical practitioner research and collaborative inquiry.
