Mission and Vision

The EDII Committee of The DAN School of Drama and Music will lead the DAN School towards diversifying its community and curriculum to become an inclusive and equitable place for students, faculty, and staff to work. It is undeniable that systemic injustices including racism, sexism, and colonialism, have afflicted our culture, have also been manifest in the performing arts. It is likewise undeniable that Drama and Music, as they have been taught and practiced at Queen’s University, have been complicit in the replication of many of these injustices, including prioritizing Western-European traditions at the expense of Indigenous and other cultural art forms. We in the DAN School are actively working to correct such past practices by prioritizing the rich creative work of scholars who identify as Indigenous, Black, or People of Colour (IBPOC), hiring more IBPOC faculty, and creating a school where all students can thrive. To this end, the Committee pledges to be an agent of positive change by rectifying any examples of injustice that occur within the DAN School. We want to see a DAN School that is a decolonized and anti-racist place for music and theatre creation, research, performance, and education.

Meet The DAN School EDII Committee

The need to address the systemic imbalances and injustices that exist in all areas of society is urgent - and Queen’s University is no exception. I am happy to be a part of the necessary evolution of the Dan School in becoming an institution that promotes, embraces and engages in fully inclusive practices at every level.

My primary concern is to ensure that the DAN School is a place where people of any race, ethnicity, gender or sexuality will find a congenial atmosphere in which to work and create. There are obviously many factors that contribute to such an atmosphere. For example, diversity of faculty, of students, and of curriculum all have a major influence, and making progress in each of those areas is never far from my mind. But something that is not always as readily mentioned is how helpful it is for us to maintain an emphasis on creation of new works. Naturally, the traditional repertoires of drama and music remain important, but it is also important to make room for students and faculty to involve themselves in new creations, because new works provide an opportunity to alter the repertoire and move away from simply replicating the old traditional canons. Welcoming new creations inevitably means welcoming new kinds of people, and it is when new work is in dialogue with traditional work that we develop the richest and most complex understanding of who “we” are. And I think maintaining such openness will make us a better School.

As a person of mixed-race and mixed-cultural heritage, I dedicate my artistic process and my scholarly work to celebrating Afro-Caribbean culture and resilience. I am eager to help transform the Dan School into a place where all our stories and voices matter.

Sarah Waisvisz
I recognize that Queen’s, the Dan School and I myself require deep change to address past wrongs on institutional and personal levels. I will act within this committee and apart from it, to continually reassess how I “work and play” on these territories of the Anishenaabe, Haudenosaunee and Mississauga and learn better ways to be a member of this university, to assist in making meaningful changes in the departments and programs I am part of, and to revise my own teaching and learning practices.

Anti-Harassment Policy

The Dan School of Drama and Music is committed to developing and maintaining an inclusive and respectful workplace and community that support students, staff and faculty in all spaces including the classroom, office, rehearsal and performance spaces.

We will not tolerate conduct that is meant to undermine the dignity or self-esteem of an individual, or which creates A hostile environment.
Harassment may be obvious but more frequently takes the form of subtle actions. Remember that by looking out for each other, we can tackle uncomfortable situations when they arise.

Students and faculty must speak up against harassment and stand together in addressing problems when they arise.

Together we will make our production workspaces and classrooms respectful spaces.
